The short answer

Naliasar Excavation Site: what visitors should know first

Only for history enthusiasts. There is little to see on the ground, so treat it as a short stop and read up beforehand. Many of the better finds from Sambhar excavations are reported to be in museums rather than on site.

History and context

The story behind Naliasar Excavation Site

Wikipedia describes Naliasar as an ancient town about 6 km from Sambhar, where remains of buildings, coins, pottery, terracotta and shell objects have been found. Excavation records for Sambhar mention trial digs in 1884 and a scientific excavation in the 1930s.

The layers of occupation reported at the site are not well documented, so treat claims about dating cautiously.

Why it matters

Why Naliasar Excavation Site is worth your time

Naliasar is one of the places that show people lived around the lake long before the salt industry. Archaeological work near Sambhar in 1884 and the 1930s recorded terracotta figurines, seals and coins, and the area is often cited in connection with ancient settlement near the playa.

It is a modest site, but it makes the point that Sambhar is more than a lake. The surrounding country has a layered human story, from an early settlement to a Chauhan capital and a Mughal marriage, and a short stop here helps you read the landscape with more care.

    The finds

Coins, terracotta and pottery came from digs here, mostly now in museums.

  3. 03

    The setting

Village fields and the pale lake edge give the site a quiet, rural feel.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Ask your driver for Naliasar village, about 4 to 6 km from Sambhar, since sources give slightly different distances. The excavated mound is not signposted as a visitor site, so go with someone who can point it out and treat it as a small, unstaffed place.

What you will see is mainly the setting: a mound at the edge of the old lake with village fields around it. The finds, including coins, pottery, terracotta and shell objects, are not displayed on site. Some Sambhar excavation finds are reported to be in Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, so a stop there on a Jaipur day can add context.

This is a quick, low-expectation stop that fits between the temple and the lake. Do not detour far for it.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask locally for the exact site, since it is not signposted
  • Do not remove anything from the mound
  • Keep the stop short; there are no facilities
  • Read up on Sambhar excavations beforehand
