Sambhar Lake is India's largest inland salt lake, a shallow basin roughly 35 km long that lies across Jaipur, Nagaur and Ajmer districts, about 70 to 80 km from Jaipur. Depending on the year it is a sheet of brine, a muddy flat or a glaring white crust. That unpredictability is the point of going. After a good monsoon, algae bloom and tens of thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos arrive for the winter; after a dry year you get salt pans, wide skies and a very quiet horizon.
The town of Sambhar Lake takes its name from Shakambhari, the goddess of the Chauhan Rajputs, whose temple sits on a rocky outcrop some distance from town. Legend says she turned a plain of riches into salt. Closer to town, Devyani Kund is a small pilgrimage pond ringed by temples and linked in local tradition with the wedding of Devayani and King Yayati. Naliasar, a few kilometres away, is an excavation site that has yielded coins and terracotta. Salt has been farmed here for centuries, and Sambhar Salts Limited still runs a private metre-gauge and narrow-gauge railway through the works.
This is a simple, low-infrastructure destination, best treated as a long day trip from Jaipur or a stop on the way to Ajmer and Pushkar. There are no big hotels, few formal viewing facilities and no strong shade, so go in the cool months, start early, carry water and keep expectations calm. Come for light, birds, salt and two genuinely old shrines, and it rewards you well.

Leave Jaipur by 7 am to reach the lake edge before the sun climbs, and head first for the Sambhar Salts Limited area to see the salt pans and the narrow-gauge wagons from outside the works. Eat lunch in town or carry food, since choices are basic.
