Plan 01

1 day at Sambhar Lake

  1. 01

Day 1: Salt, shrines and a late-afternoon lake

Leave Jaipur by 7 am to reach the lake edge before the sun climbs, and head first for the Sambhar Salts Limited area to see the salt pans and the narrow-gauge wagons from outside the works. Visit Devyani Kund and the Jageshwar temple in town in the late morning, then drive to Shakambhari Mata temple for darshan and, if you can manage the steps, the cenotaph view. Eat lunch in town or carry food, since choices are basic. Spend the last two hours of daylight at a viewpoint on the lake, watching birds if there is water, and drive back after dusk only if your driver knows the roads.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Shakambhari Mata Temple1 to 2 hours including the climbModerateEarly morning or late afternoon; the August fair is crowded

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Shakambhari Mata Temple: The approach has steps and a winding stair to the cenotaph. Older visitors can usually manage the shrine and rest, then skip the upper climb. Shade is limited, and facilities are simple.

Plan 02

2 days at Sambhar Lake

  1. 01

Day 1: Town, temples and the salt works

Arrive mid-morning and spend the day on Devyani Kund, the Jageshwar temple, the colonial Circuit House area and the outskirts of the salt works. Take the evening aarti at Devyani Kund and have an early dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Sunrise, Shakambhari and the road on

Go out before sunrise for birds and light on the lake edge. Return for breakfast, then drive to Shakambhari Mata temple while it is still cool. Continue to Ajmer or back to Jaipur by afternoon.

Plan 03

3 days at Sambhar Lake

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Arrive in the afternoon, walk the town lanes and visit Devyani Kund for the evening aarti. Keep the day light; the roads are slow and the stay options are simple.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Lake and salt

Spend the early morning on bird watching, then visit the salt works and look for the railway. Rest in the afternoon and return to the lake for sunset or, in the right season, a full-moon evening.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Shakambhari and Naliasar

Visit Shakambhari Mata temple at opening time, climb to the cenotaph if able, and pass Naliasar on the way back for a short, low-expectation look at an excavation site. Leave for Jaipur or Ajmer by lunch.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Sambhar Lake trip for parents and children

  • Plan this as a day trip from Jaipur with a car and driver; the roads are the slowest part, and a stop-and-go day is easier if the car is yours for the whole day.
  • Go in November to February. Summer afternoons on the lake are punishing and there is almost no shade outside the temples.
  • Carry water, a hat and snacks. Toilets are limited, so use facilities in town before heading to the lake or the hill temple.
  • The Shakambhari temple area involves steps, and the cenotaph above it is reached by a winding stair. Older visitors can do the shrine and skip the climb.
  • Do not drive onto marshy parts of the lake bed; vehicles can get stuck. Stay on firm tracks and listen to your driver.
  • Daylight is the safe window. Aim to be back on the main road before dark, especially after the potholed stretch past Bichoon.
