Sanur guide · Where to eat
Places to eat in Sanur, with what to order and how comfortable each is for families and older travellers.
Updated
Sanur's food scene is calm and mixed. The main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, has cafes and restaurants serving Italian, Indonesian and international dishes, while the night market at its north end offers cheap local snacks. Local classics such as Warung Mak Beng are fish-based, so vegetarians and Jain diners should not rely on them.
For plant-based eating, a vegan guide lists Genius Cafe, Sala Bistro and Gong Restaurant as having vegan dishes on mixed menus, and Gong has a separate vegan menu. None is a pure vegetarian restaurant here, and no Jain-only kitchen or fully vegetarian Indian restaurant in Sanur could be verified. Ganesha Ek Sanskriti lists a Sanur outlet for Indian food, but its vegetarian and Jain options are not confirmed, so ask before relying on it. Sattvic and pure vegetarian restaurants are easier to find in Kuta and Nusa Dua, about a 30 to 40 minute drive.
Useful safe orders are nasi goreng or mie goreng without egg, gado-gado without egg and prawn crackers, tempeh and tofu dishes and fresh fruit. Ask about shrimp paste, fish sauce and stock, and drink bottled water. Hotels will often cook plain vegetarian meals if you ask the day before.
Menus and kitchens change. If you follow a strict diet or have an allergy, confirm with the restaurant before you order.
