Key hubs

Sapa airport and railway station

Airport
There is no airport at Sapa. The usual gateway is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, about 300 km away; check current direct flights from Indian cities to Hanoi before booking.
Railway station
Lao Cai station, the end of the Hanoi line, is the usual railhead, followed by a road transfer of about an hour to Sapa. A funicular called the Muong Hoa line runs from Sa Pa Station to the Fansipan cable car, but it is a tourist line, not an intercity service.
Getting around
The town centre is walkable but hilly. Taxis, motorbike taxis and hotel transfers reach Cat Cat, the waterfalls and the valley villages; ride-hailing is less reliable than in Hanoi.

How to reach Sapa by air

There is no airport at Sapa. The usual gateway is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, about 300 km from Sa Pa; direct flights from Indian cities should be checked at booking time. The nearest other airport mentioned by Wikivoyage is at Dien Bien Phu, which is about nine hours away by road.

How to reach Sapa by train

Lao Cai station is the railhead for Sapa, reached by an overnight train from Hanoi of roughly eight to nine hours, followed by a road transfer of about an hour up to the town. A separate tourist funicular runs from Sa Pa Station to the Fansipan cable car; it is not an intercity line.

How to reach Sapa by road

An expressway and highway route links Hanoi to Lao Cai and on to Sapa, taking roughly five to six hours by road. Limousine vans, buses and private cars run the route; the last stretch from Lao Cai is a winding mountain road that can cause motion sickness.

Getting around Sapa

The centre is walkable but steep. Taxis, motorbike taxis and hotel transfers reach Cat Cat, the waterfalls and the valley villages; agree prices in advance and avoid riding motorbikes on wet roads.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Sapa

  • Plan a rest day after the journey from Hanoi; the overnight train and winding road are tiring.
  • Carry medicines in original packaging, a prescription list and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
