Plan 01

1 day in Saputara

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake, ropeway and sunset

Start with a slow walk round Saputara Lake and a boat ride while the morning is quiet. Visit the Tribal Museum and the artists' village before lunch, then rest. In the late afternoon ride the ropeway to Sunset Point and Governor's Hill and stay for the evening light. Finish with a Gujarati thali dinner in town.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Saputara Lake1–2 hoursEasyMorning or late afternoon; monsoon for green hills, October to February for clear air

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Saputara

  1. 01

    Day 1: The town

Walk the lake, go boating, and spend an hour at the Tribal Museum and the Gandhavpur Artists' Village. After a break, take the ropeway to Sunset Point late in the day.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Gandhavpur Artists' Village45–60 minutesEasyMorning or early afternoon, when studios are more likely to be open

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Waghai loop

Drive towards Waghai, a trip of roughly 50 km, to see Gira Falls if it is the monsoon or just after, then the Waghai Botanical Garden. Return by late afternoon, or pause for Hatgadh Fort if you are fit and the weather is dry.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Gira Falls2 hours there, plus travelModerateJuly to October, when rain fills the falls
Waghai Botanical Garden1.5–2 hoursEasyMorning; monsoon and winter for greenery
Hatgadh Fort2–3 hours including the driveDemandingMorning, post-monsoon to winter

Pace: Hatgadh Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Gira Falls: Viewing platforms are reachable, but paths and steps near the falls can be slippery and wet. A seat at the main viewpoint and a short walk is enough for most older travellers.

With parents at Hatgadh Fort: The approach involves a rocky, uneven path with no handrails or seating. Most seniors will find it hard. Staying at the base and enjoying the view is a sensible choice.

Plan 03

3 days in Saputara

  1. 01

    Day 1: Lake and viewpoints

Spend the day in town: the lake, museum, artists' village and an evening ropeway ride for sunset.

  2. 02

Day 2: Gira Falls and Waghai

Set out early for Gira Falls and the botanical garden. If you have energy, continue towards Vansda National Park for forest and birds, or turn back and rest.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Gira Falls2 hours there, plus travelModerateJuly to October, when rain fills the falls
Vansda National ParkHalf a day or moreModerateOctober to March; check monsoon access

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Gira Falls: Viewing platforms are reachable, but paths and steps near the falls can be slippery and wet. A seat at the main viewpoint and a short walk is enough for most older travellers.

With parents at Vansda National Park: Mostly seen from vehicles and short forest walks. Facilities are basic and the journey from Saputara is long, so older travellers should plan a rest and break the journey.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Pilgrimage or forest

Choose a long day: Saptashrungi Gad across the border in Maharashtra, or Shabari Dham and the Purna sanctuary on the Ahwa side. Check road conditions and temple timings first.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Saputara trip for parents and children

  • Take the ropeway to Sunset Point rather than climbing, and ride in the afternoon to avoid the longest queues.
  • Plan one outing in the morning, rest after lunch and keep the evening for the lake. The town is small, so there is no need to rush.
  • The lake path and the museum are level and the easiest stops. Hatgadh and Gira Falls involve uneven or slippery ground.
  • Book a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms and easy car access, especially in holiday periods.
  • Hire a car for day trips; roads to Waghai and Ahwa are long, so break the journey and carry water.
  • Carry a light layer for evenings, and rain gear from June to September.
