Plan 01
1 day in Sasaram
- 01
Day 1: Tombs, a hill temple and the old fort mound
Start at the tomb of Sher Shah Suri soon after opening, when the lake is calm and the light is low on the red sandstone. Walk the causeway, then take the short drive to the tomb of Hasan Khan Suri (Sukha Rauza). After lunch in town, go up to the Tarachandi cave shrine in the Kaimur foothills and, if energy allows, ask a local guide about the Ashokan edict at Chandan Shaheed. Return to the tomb lake at dusk if you can.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Tomb of Sher Shah Suri About 1-1.5 hours Easy November to February; early morning or late afternoon for light Tomb of Hasan Khan Suri (Sukha Rauza) 30-60 minutes Easy November to February; mornings Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.
Plan 02
2 days in Sasaram

Day 1: Sher Shah's Sasaram
Spend the morning at the tomb of Sher Shah Suri and the tomb of Hasan Khan Suri, then visit Tarachandi before the afternoon heat. Use the evening for a stroll around the tomb lake and a simple dinner in town.

Day 2: Waterfalls or the hill forts
In the rains (July to September) drive to Manjhar Kund and Dhua Kund for the falls. In the cooler months, choose between Rohtasgarh (a full day with a steep climb or a long, rough drive) and Shergarh (a shorter outing on the Durgavati side). Hire a driver who knows the current road conditions, carry water and start early.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Manjhar Kund and Dhua Kund Half day Moderate July to October for water flow; November to February for comfortable walking Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Manjhar Kund and Dhua Kund: The approaches are uneven and can be slippery in the rains, with limited seating and few facilities. Older travellers should go with a helper and stay behind safe viewing points.

Day 2: Rohtasgarh
Leave very early. Rohtasgarh is a long day: the approach is about two hours to the foot of the hill, then a stiff climb, or a rough road if your driver knows it. Carry food and water and plan to be back down before dark.

Day 3: Shergarh and Kaimur
Go to Shergarh, the forest ruin on the Durgavati side, in the morning, then use the afternoon for a gentle look at the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary edge or the Manjhar Kund and Dhua Kund falls, depending on season.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary Half day to full day Moderate Winter for walking; monsoon for the waterfalls and green forest Manjhar Kund and Dhua Kund Half day Moderate July to October for water flow; November to February for comfortable walking Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary: Roads on the plateau can be rough and facilities are few. Short visits to the waterfall areas are manageable; deeper forest outings are not recommended for those with mobility issues.

Pacing
Pacing a Sasaram trip for parents and children
- Treat the tombs, Tarachandi and the town as the main programme; the hill forts and waterfalls involve long, uneven climbs and are not easy for most older travellers.
- Rohtasgarh's main foot approach is a stair of roughly 2,000 limestone steps. Do not attempt it without good fitness, sturdy shoes and plenty of water; a road route exists, but check its condition with a local driver first.
- Visit between November and February. From April to June midday heat on open stone is punishing, and in the monsoon hill roads and steps turn slippery.
- Hire one car and driver for the whole day so you have somewhere shaded to rest between sights; there are few cafes or seating areas at the hill sites.
- Carry your own water, snacks and any medication; there are no reliable facilities at Shergarh, the forts or the waterfalls.
- Hospitals and good medical care are limited in Sasaram, so travellers with health conditions should keep a medical plan and carry necessary prescriptions.
