Sathyamangalam, often shortened to Sathy, is a small municipal town on the Bhavani River in Erode district, where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet. About 37,800 people lived here at the 2011 census, and the town works as the gateway to the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, one of Tamil Nadu's largest protected forests. It is not a polished tourist town. It is a working market and district centre, and that is part of its appeal.
The reason to come is the countryside around it. The tiger reserve, notified in 2013, offers forest-department safaris and treks, closed during the monsoon months. Closer in, Bhavanisagar Dam holds back the Bhavani to the west, Kodiveri Dam is a historic weir with a riverside park, and the goddess temple at Bannari draws pilgrims from across the Kongu region. Further east, Pariyur and Gobichettipalayam make a gentle temple-and-town day.
Plan this as a base for two or three unhurried days. Mornings are best for outdoor sights, afternoons are warm all year, and facilities are simpler than in a big city. Senior travellers will find the dams, temples and parks easy; the forest outings need booking and a tolerance for rough tracks. Check with the forest office before building a trip around a safari.
