The short answer

Kodiveri Dam: what visitors should know first

A pleasant, low-effort stop for families, particularly on a cool morning. It gets busy on weekends and holidays, and bathing and coracle rides depend on water levels and local rules, so check on arrival.

History and context

The story behind Kodiveri Dam

The masonry dam on the Bhavani River is attributed to Urali Semba Vettuva Jayankonda Chola Kongalvan, a ruler of Vadakarai Nadu under Kulothunga Chola I, in 1125 CE; a seventeenth-century date is also cited for the dam, so the date is not settled. Stone is said to have been quarried at Kalkadambur, about ten kilometres north of Sathyamangalam.

Two channels leave the dam, serving farmland on both banks of the river.

Why it matters

Why Kodiveri Dam is worth your time

Kodiveri Dam is a reminder that this district has a long tradition of managing the Bhavani River. The weir diverts water into two channels, Arakkankottai on the north bank and Thadapalli on the south, which irrigate farmland along the river.

Tradition attributes the dam to a Chola-period local ruler in 1125 CE, although a seventeenth-century date is also cited, so the date is better treated as traditional. Whatever its exact age, it is a good place to see how irrigation shaped the Kongu landscape.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Kodiveri is a straightforward, easy outing. Park near the entrance, walk through the riverside gardens, and spend your time near the weir where water spills across a broad masonry structure into the Bhavani below. Some visitors come mainly to watch families bathe and picnic; others come for the coracle rides that are offered at the dam, when conditions allow.

Go on a weekday morning if you want space. At weekends and on public holidays, the lawns fill up with groups, vendors and children. Whatever the day, keep valuables with you and watch your footing on wet steps.

You can combine Kodiveri with Bhavanisagar Dam and Bannari on a single day out from Sathyamangalam. Bring water and a hat, and treat the food stalls at the site with the usual caution; carry a snack if you have older travellers with sensitive stomachs.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit on a weekday if you can
  • Check water levels and local rules before bathing or taking a ride
  • Wear shoes with grip near wet steps
  • Carry water and a snack
