Why it matters

Why Walking Safari in Satpura is worth your time

A jeep can show you animals, but a walk teaches you how a forest works. In Satpura, guides read the landscape, from the tracks left by a sloth bear to the scrape of a sambar, and explain how plants and wildlife depend on the rivers. That makes walking safaris especially valuable for travellers who have been on many drives.

The buffer zones where walking is offered are also open for longer than the core, and are close to villages, so a walk can include a glimpse of how local communities and wildlife share the landscape. For a family that wants an educational element to the trip, this is one of the better choices.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Reading the forest

Guides point out tracks, plants and calls that are invisible from a moving jeep.

  2. 02

    Birds and butterflies

Walking at dawn gives you a slow look at small wildlife that safaris often miss.

  3. 03

    Buffer-zone landscapes

Jamani Dev has streams, riverbanks and regenerating forest rather than the rocky core hills.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Ask your lodge which walking routes are open that week, as permissions depend on the zone and the forest department. Walks usually start soon after sunrise with a naturalist or forest guide, and last two to three hours. You leave the jeep and walk along forest paths, stopping to read tracks, identify trees such as teak and mahua and listen for alarm calls.

Expect small details rather than big sightings: pugmarks, scat, termite mounds, butterflies, spiders and birds. The guide is armed with local knowledge of how the animals use the forest. You may occasionally see larger animals at a distance, but the guide will keep you away from anything dangerous.

Wear long trousers, closed shoes with grip, a hat and muted clothes. Carry water, insect repellent and a small first-aid kit. Keep to the guide's pace and silence, and never leave the group. If it is hot, the walk may be shortened or moved earlier in the day.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm which walking routes are open on your dates
  • Wear long trousers, closed shoes and muted colours
  • Carry water, repellent and a hat
  • Tell the guide about any medical conditions in advance
  • Never leave the group or run if you see an animal
