Satpura Tiger Reserve lies in Narmadapuram district, in the northern foothills of the Satpura range. It was built up from Satpura National Park (notified in 1981), Bori Wildlife Sanctuary and Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary, and became a tiger reserve in 2000. Together the core and buffer cover roughly 2,100 sq km of sandstone ridges, ravines, meadows and dense forest of sal, teak and bamboo.
What makes it different from most Indian reserves is water. The usual way into the main Madhai core zone is a short boat crossing of the Denwa backwaters, with the safari jeep waiting on the far bank. That same water allows boat rides and canoe safaris, and Satpura is one of the few places in India where guided walking safaris are on offer, mostly in buffer areas such as Jamani Dev. Tigers live here, but the forest is thick and sightings are less predictable than in open-grassland parks, so go for the landscape, the leopards, gaur, sloth bears and birds as much as for a big cat.
The practical rhythm is simple. Base yourself at Madhai for two or three nights, do a core-zone jeep round, a boat or canoe trip and a walk, and add Churna for a longer day if you have time. Core zones close for the monsoon, so plan between October and June, and book permits early. Pachmarhi, the hill station on the plateau above, has its own Raahzo guide and makes a natural pairing, but Satpura itself is a quiet, forest-and-river trip that suits families and older travellers who are comfortable with early starts.
