1 day in Shahapur

  1. 01

Day 1: Mahuli and the reservoirs

Reach Asangaon early and go to the base of Mahuli Fort, where those who are fit can start the climb at sunrise. Others can enjoy the base temples and the stream. Have an early lunch in Shahapur, then visit Bhatsa Dam viewpoints in the afternoon and finish at Manas Mandir before heading back.

Mahuli FortHalf a day to a full day; about 2 to 3 hours up and 1 to 2 hours down for most walkersDemandingOctober to February, starting at sunrise; the monsoon is lush but the rock is slippery
Bhatsa Dam45 minutes to 1 hourEasyPost-monsoon, September to November, for full water and green hills
Manas Mandir45 minutes to 1 hourEasyMorning, in the cooler months

Pace: Mahuli Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Mahuli Fort: The climb is long, steep in the last section and exposed to the sun, with no handrails or seating. Most older travellers should stop at the temples and stream near the base and skip the summit.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Shahapur trip for parents and children

  • Skip the Mahuli summit climb; enjoy the base temples and the view from the road.
  • Plan sights for the first half of the day and rest after lunch, since shade and seating are scarce.
  • Carry plenty of water, a hat and any medicines; there are few chemists or hospitals near the forest.
  • Hire a car with a driver for the day rather than relying on autos between sights.
  • Check access to the sanctuary and dams before you leave; some points are controlled.
  • Water: Carry at least two to three litres per person for Mahuli; there is no dependable source on the trail.
