Shahapur is a small town in Thane district, in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, about 75 km north-east of Mumbai. It is better known as a gateway than a destination: the town itself is plain, but the hills around it hold Mahuli Fort, the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary and the reservoirs that supply drinking water to Mumbai and Thane.
The interest here is outdoor and quiet. Mahuli, the highest point in Thane district, is a classic trek with Shivaji-era history. Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary protects about 320 sq km of forest with leopards, sloth bears and a long bird list. Bhatsa Dam and the lakes give simple scenic stops, and Manas Mandir, a Palitana-style Jain temple, offers a calm pause on the highway.
It works best as a day trip or a night away from Mumbai in the cooler months. Plan around the sunrise, carry water and keep expectations modest: there are few formal facilities, and access to dams and some forest areas is controlled. For older travellers, the base areas and road drives are the comfortable part; the fort climb is not.
