The short answer
Ajoba Hill Trek: what visitors should know first
Walk to the Valmiki ashram if you want a pilgrim-and-forest day trek: about three hours from Dehene, with a small waterfall on the way in the monsoon. The steep climb beyond to Sita's cradle needs care, and the summit cone is for equipped climbers only.
History and context
The story behind Ajoba Hill Trek
Local tradition holds that the sage Valmiki composed the Ramayana here and that Sita gave birth to Lav and Kush on the hill; the name Ajoba, meaning grandfather, is linked to the twins calling Valmiki their grandfather. There are no fortifications and no recorded history.

Why it matters
Why Ajoba Hill Trek is worth your time
Ajoba combines a forest trek with a living pilgrim tradition. The Valmiki ashram and the cradle cave are visited for their link to the Ramayana, and the hill rises above Dehene, near the lower end of the Sandhan valley.
It is quieter than the big Sahyadri forts and the walk to the ashram is less exposed, which makes it a reasonable first trek for fit families, provided they stop below the summit cone.

How to experience it
Reach Asangaon station on the Kasara line, then Shahapur and Dholkhamb, and on to Dehene village at the foot of the hill, about 114 km from Mumbai by road. The walk to the Valmiki ashram takes about three hours from Dehene; part of the approach is on a road to the plateau, followed by about 4 km on an unpaved track. In the monsoon a small waterfall lies on the way.
The ashram has a samadhi temple said to be of Valmiki, a dharamshala and a spring near the tank that flows year-round. Behind it a steep, unpaved path climbs for about 1 to 1.5 hours to a gorge between two hills, where a natural cave holds two small wooden cradles linked with Lav and Kush; iron railings have been added at the cave.
The cone-shaped summit above the cradle is a technical climb and should be left to equipped climbers. A loop from Dehene to the ashram, the cradle cave and back is about 12.5 km, so start early and leave daylight for the descent.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Start from Dehene early in the day
- Fill water at the ashram spring and carry extra
- Do not attempt the summit cone without climbing gear
- Go with a guide for night or monsoon treks
- Check monsoon restrictions before going

Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Dehene village, via Dholkhamb, Shahapur taluka, Thane district
- Time needed
- Most of a day for the ashram; add 1 to 1.5 hours each way for Sita's cradle
- Best time
- October to February; the monsoon is green with a waterfall on the route, if access is open
- Walking level
- Moderate
- Senior comfort
- The final stretch to the Valmiki ashram is on a rough unpaved track of about 4 km, roughly an hour's walk, after the road ends on the plateau. Steady older walkers may manage that section slowly with a stick if a vehicle can reach the road end; confirm road conditions locally. The climb to Sita's cradle is steep and unpaved and not suitable for them.
- Tickets and access
- No official ticket is published. The ashram has a dharamshala that can shelter about 20 people; ask locally. The summit cone should not be attempted without mountaineering skills and equipment. Maharashtra districts often issue prohibitory orders (now under Section 163 of the BNSS, formerly Section 144) that close or restrict forts, waterfalls and dams during the monsoon, especially after accidents. Confirm current access with the local police, forest office or a registered trek organiser before you set out.
