The short answer

Tansa Dam: what visitors should know first

Visit if you already plan a sanctuary drive and like engineering history or lake views. Access to the dam works is controlled, so enjoy the scenery from permitted roadside points and confirm entry locally before going.

History and context

The story behind Tansa Dam

The Tansa valley, about 88 km north of Bombay, was chosen as a new water source in 1872, and work began in 1886. Glover and Company built the dam between 1886 and 1891, and the pipeline to Bombay was completed in 1892. Capacity was increased in later decades.

Published dimensions for the dam vary between sources, so treat any single height or storage figure with caution.

Why it matters

Why Tansa Dam is worth your time

Tansa Dam opened in 1892 and is one of the seven sources of drinking water for Mumbai. Mumbai's growth in the mid-19th century had outgrown its older supplies, the Tansa valley was chosen in 1872, and work began in 1886. The reservoir covers about 19 sq km and still supplies the city.

It is also the reason the surrounding forest was protected: the sanctuary around the lake safeguards the catchment. Seeing the dam helps connect the quiet hills of Shahapur to the city 75 km away.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Think of Tansa Dam as a stop on a longer forest drive rather than a destination on its own. The reservoir and the green slopes around it are best seen in the first hours after sunrise, when the water is calm and birds are active along the edges. Park only where the road is wide, and walk a short distance to the viewpoints that are open to the public.

The dam is a working part of Mumbai's water supply, so there are restrictions that can change without notice. Do not enter fenced areas, do not climb down to the water, and do not fly drones. Ask a local officer or the forest office what is permitted on the day you visit.

Combine Tansa Dam with a slow drive through Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, which surrounds the catchment, and finish with lunch in Shahapur. Carry water and snacks, because there are no shops at the viewpoints.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm access with local officers before you go
  • Stay outside fenced areas and away from the water
  • Do not fly drones near the dam
  • Carry water and snacks; there are no shops nearby
