Shamlaji is a small pilgrimage town in Gujarat's Aravalli district, close to the Rajasthan border. Its centre is the Shamlaji Vishnu Mandir on the bank of the Meshwo river, where Vishnu is worshipped as Gadadhar, the mace-bearer, and where Bhil communities know the deity as Kaliyo Dev. The valley is hilly and wooded, and the town is small enough to cover on foot.
Most visitors come for the temple and leave within a morning. It rewards a slower visit. The carved sandstone and brick exterior, the river bank where pilgrims bathe, and a cluster of smaller shrines can each be seen at an easy pace. A few kilometres away, the Meshwo reservoir now covers Devni Mori, a Buddhist monastery and stupa site of around the third to fourth century, and the ruined Harishchandra ni Chori temple still has its carved gateway standing.
The big event is the fair around Kartik Purnima in November, when pilgrims from Gujarat and Rajasthan arrive on foot. It is vivid, and very crowded. Elders and anyone who dislikes queues will have a much calmer visit on an ordinary weekday between November and February.
Shamlaji is best planned as a day trip from Ahmedabad, Himmatnagar or Modasa, or as a stop between Gujarat and Rajasthan. Facilities are modest, so book any overnight stay in a larger town and confirm temple timings before you go.
