Plan 01

1 day in Shamlaji

  1. 01

Day 1: Darshan, river and reservoir

Reach Shamlaji early and join the darshan queue before the morning crowds build, after looking at the carved exterior and the Garuda torana. Walk down to the Meshwo river bank and visit the smaller shrines nearby, including Triloknathji and the underground Kashi Vishwanatha. Break for lunch and rest in the shade. In the afternoon, drive to the Meshwo reservoir, which covers the Devni Mori Buddhist site, and, if time allows, to Harishchandra ni Chori. Return for the evening aarti if you would like to see the temple at dusk.

Plan 02

2 days in Shamlaji

  1. 01

    Day 1: The temple town

Start with the temple's carved exterior and darshan early in the morning, then spend time on the river bank and at the smaller shrines. After a long midday rest, go back for the evening aarti and a slow walk through the village. Confirm timings with the temple trust in advance.

  2. 02

Day 2: History and the wider valley

Visit Harishchandra ni Chori and the Meshwo reservoir in the morning, then the Shamlaji Museum if it is open. In the afternoon, either rest or drive out to Polo Forest near Vijaynagar for the ruined Hindu and Jain temples, allowing generous driving time.

Shamlaji Museum30 to 45 minutesEasyWeekday morning; check opening on the day

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Polo Forest (Vijaynagar): Paths between temple groups are uneven and some stretches are on foot, with limited facilities. Visit the nearest temple groups only, and carry water and a hat.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Shamlaji trip for parents and children

  • Visit on a weekday morning between November and February, and avoid full-moon days and the Kartik Purnima fair week.
  • Ask the temple staff about the easiest route to darshan for elders and wheelchair users, as queues and steps can be tiring.
  • Wear traditional or modest clothing and shoes that are easy to remove; carry a hat and water.
  • The river bank steps can be slippery; elders can enjoy the view from the top and skip bathing.
  • Hire a car for the full day; sights outside the village are spread out and have little shade or seating.
  • Confirm darshan times on the day, as published timings differ, and plan a rest between the morning and evening sessions.
