How to reach Sharjah by air
Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) is about 13 km from the city and is the base of Air Arabia. Wikipedia lists direct flights from Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi and Jaipur; schedules change, so check with the airlines. Dubai's airports are also an option.
How to reach Sharjah by train
There is no passenger railway station that visitors use in Sharjah, so plan to arrive by air, road or bus.
How to reach Sharjah by road
Sharjah is connected by highway to Dubai, Ajman and the other emirates, and intercity buses and taxis run between the cities. Expect heavy traffic at commuting hours.
Getting around Sharjah
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way around. The old town is walkable, but the museums, mosques and waterfront are spread out, so use a car for the longer hops.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Sharjah
- Use taxis or ride-hailing between sights; walking between districts in the heat is tiring.
- Carry travel insurance and a medication list. Sharjah has public and private hospitals, and Dubai has more, but cover matters.
- Dress modestly and carry a light scarf or shawl, which doubles as cover for mosques and for cool, air-conditioned galleries.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
