Sheopur is a small town in the far north-west of Madhya Pradesh, on the right bank of the Seep River, a tributary of the Chambal. For most visitors it is the base for Kuno National Park, the forest that became the site of India's cheetah reintroduction in 2022. The town itself rewards a morning, though, because it has a genuine old fort with a long and layered history.
Sheopur Fort sits on a mound where several streams meet the Seep. A Jain pillar inscription of 1026 refers to a fort here, and the site later passed through the hands of the Khaljis, the Malwa sultans, Sher Shah Suri, the Gaur Rajputs and the Scindias of Gwalior. Today parts of it are protected, it holds a small Sahariya museum in the old Darbar Hall, and conservation work has been supported by the World Monuments Fund.
This is not a polished tourist circuit. Services are basic, signage is thin, and distances are long, so plan a slow trip: one day for the fort and town, one or two days for Kuno. The reward is quiet. You are far from crowds, in dry forest country on the edge of Rajasthan, and you can pair a heritage walk with a safari.
For older travellers the main issues are long road journeys and basic facilities. Allow generous time between stops, keep a good driver, and carry water, snacks and any medicines.
