The short answer
Kuno National Park: what visitors should know first
Go if you want a quiet dry-forest safari and accept that cheetahs may stay out of sight. Visit between the October reopening and the end of June, book through the official forest channels, and check which gates are open because access has changed over time.
History and context
The story behind Kuno National Park
Kuno was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1981 with an area of about 344.7 sq km and was upgraded to a national park in 2018, when about 413 sq km was added. The park now covers about 748.76 sq km and is named for the Kuno River. An 18th-century fort at Palpur, built by rulers of Karauli, lies in the core area.
In January 2022 an action plan for cheetah reintroduction, beginning at Kuno, was launched. Eight cheetahs arrived from Namibia on 17 September 2022, twelve more came in February 2023, and further releases into the wild took place in 2023 and February 2025.

Why it matters
Why Kuno National Park is worth your time
Kuno matters because it is where India restarted its cheetah story. In 2022 the first African cheetahs arrived from Namibia in a long-planned attempt to restore the species, which had been declared extinct in India. More animals followed in 2023, and groups were released into the wider forest in 2025. Experts have debated the science and transparency of the project, so it is best seen as an ongoing experiment.
The park itself was a wildlife sanctuary from 1981 and became a national park in 2018, when it was enlarged. It protects a rare stretch of dry forest in the Chambal region and is named after the Kuno River that runs through it. Even without a cheetah sighting, the landscape, the quiet and the chance to see other wildlife give a different side of Madhya Pradesh from the better-known tiger reserves.
Highlights
What not to miss

- 02
Dry-forest wildlife
Deer, langurs and birds are the more reliable sightings on the tracks, along with the Kuno River landscape.
- 03
Palpur Fort
An 18th-century Karauli-built fort lies in the park's core area, a reminder of older human history here.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Kuno as a separate day from Sheopur town. The park lies roughly 70 km east of Sheopur by road, and the village of Sesaipura is the closest settlement to its gates. Check on the official website which gates are open: in October 2023 the Peepalwada (Peepal Bawdi) and Ahera gates reopened for visitors while the main Tikartoli gate stayed shut to protect cheetah habitat there, and this can change.
Safaris are in forest-department vehicles with a guide, usually in the early morning and late afternoon. Bookings open about a month ahead, and the quickest route is the official online portal. Expect dry deciduous forest, grassland, rocky ridges and the Kuno River. Chital, sambar and other deer, along with langurs and a rich birdlist, are the more reliable sightings. Cheetahs live in large enclosures and wider forest areas, and seeing one from a tourist track is a bonus, not a promise.
Stay flexible. Roads can be damaged after the monsoon, and access can change at short notice. If your parents find long rides tiring, break the trip with a night near Sheopur or Shivpuri rather than driving in and out in a day.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Check the official site for gate status before booking
- Book safaris about a month ahead and in the official portal
- Carry water, snacks and medicines; facilities are basic
- Dress in muted colours with layers for cold mornings
- Allow buffer time because roads and access change
Know before you go
Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- East of Sheopur town, about 70 km by road; gates reached via Sesaipura village
- Time needed
- Half day per safari; allow 1–2 nights nearby
- Best time
- November to March for comfortable temperatures; the park is closed in the monsoon
- Walking level
- Easy
- Senior comfort
- Safaris are by vehicle, so there is no walking, but tracks are rough and dusty and journeys to the gates are long. Early starts are cold in winter and heat builds by midday from April. Facilities near the gates are basic, so carry water, snacks and any medicines.
- Tickets and access
- Safari bookings are made online through the park's official site or the Madhya Pradesh forest booking portal, or at the ticket counter. Fees, vehicle rules and safari timings are not reproduced here; confirm them with the forest office, because gate availability and rules have changed since the cheetah release.
