Shergarh is a small settlement in Atru tehsil of Baran district, about 65 km from Baran town and roughly 90 to 100 km from Kota. It sits on the Parvan river on the Vindhyan plateau, beside a forested sanctuary and a ruined hill fort that early records call Kosavardhana.
The fort is the historical draw. An inscription dated to AD 790 records a Buddhist monastery and temple here, and later records mention a Shiva temple of the Kosavardhana fort. Today the site is mostly ruins in forest, with old shrines, residential and defensive structures and water works; nothing is staged for visitors, and facilities are minimal.
Beside it, Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary protects a forested stretch of the Parvan valley. Sloth bear, leopard and several deer species are reported, but organised safaris and published entry rules are not clear, so check with the forest office in Baran first.
Shergarh suits independent, patient travellers and history enthusiasts, and is easy to combine with Atru's Gadgach temple, Bhand Devra near Ramgarh and the Sorsan grassland. It is a long day trip from Kota or Baran, and it is not a place for hurried itineraries or anyone who needs reliable facilities.
