Before you go
Shivamogga with elderly parents: what to know
- Hire a car with a driver for wildlife stops; the camp, safari and sanctuary are spread along different roads.
- Do outdoor stops in the morning and rest after lunch, as afternoons are hot from March to May.
- The palace museum and the safari vehicle are the easiest sights; Kavaledurga and the Jog Falls base steps are demanding.
- Keep a full day for the Keladi, Ikkeri and Jog Falls circuit; it is a long drive.
- Carry water and snacks for forest outings; there are few facilities.
- Check weather and access in the monsoon, as roads and viewing galleries can close.
Easiest first
Places in Shivamogga sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Sakrebailu Elephant Camp (Places to visit · 1.5-2 hours) — Mostly flat and short walking, but the river bank can be muddy and slippery near the bathing area. There is little shade by late morning and seating is limited, so carry water and a hat.
- Shivappa Nayaka Palace Museum (Places to visit · 45-75 minutes) — Mostly level with a ground-floor hall and open grounds, though the upper rooms involve stairs. There are benches in the garden and shade from trees.
- Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — You see the animals from a vehicle, so almost no walking is needed. Entry queues and ground near the cages can be uneven; the safari bus is the comfortable part for older visitors.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day) — Roads inside the forest are rough and there are few facilities, so this suits fit, patient older travellers more than frail ones. Go in a sturdy vehicle with a driver, carry water, and avoid the monsoon months when tracks turn slippery.

Practical tips for Shivamogga
- Heat. March to May afternoons reach the mid-30s; plan outings at dawn and rest at midday.
- Monsoon. June to October is wet. Roads in the hills can be slippery and viewpoints misty; check conditions before long trips.
- Getting around. A car with a driver is far easier than buses for the camp, safari and sanctuary, which lie on different roads.
- Forest passes. Shettihalli requires forest entry passes. Confirm the process with the Shivamogga wildlife division before leaving town.
- Morning timing. The elephant camp's bathing routine is a morning event, so arrive at opening time.
- Dress and temples. Dress modestly at the temples at Keladi and Ikkeri and remove footwear inside.
- Money. Carry some cash for small entry fees, tea and offerings; card acceptance is patchy outside town.
- Photography. Keep lenses away from wild animals, and ask before photographing inside shrines.
