The smaller hill opposite Vindhyagiri, with a walled enclosure of about fourteen Jain basadis. A shorter climb than the statue, and the quieter and more architectural visit of the two.

The short answer

Chandragiri Hill Temples: what visitors should know first

Yes, particularly if the Vindhyagiri climb is too much. Chandragiri is lower and the walk is shorter, and the walled group of basadis is the best place in town to see Ganga-period and later temple building side by side. Go in the morning light.

History and context

The story behind Chandragiri Hill Temples

Old inscriptions on the hill call it by earlier names. A heritage account links activity here to the 2nd century BCE, with most of the surviving basadis inside the fort enclosure and the oldest possibly from around the 8th century CE.

The Kuge Brahmadeva Pillar records the death of the Ganga king Marasimha II in 974 CE. Dates for individual temples vary between sources, so check with a guide on site.

Why it matters

Why Chandragiri Hill Temples is worth your time

Chandragiri is where the town's story begins in tradition. Jain accounts say the teacher Bhadrabahu and the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta came here, and that is the origin of the hill's name. Whether or not you accept the tradition, the group of temples is a long record of Jain patronage, from Western Ganga work to Hoysala additions.

The enclosure also gives context to the statue across the valley. Seeing both hills makes it clear why Shravanabelagola, with its pond between two granite outcrops, became a pilgrimage centre and stayed one.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Approach from the town and start at the foot of the steps, where entry is. The hill is lower than Vindhyagiri, rising roughly 175 feet above the plain by one heritage account, so it is a more manageable climb for many people. At the top you pass into a walled enclosure holding most of the hill's roughly fourteen basadis, several of them very different in scale and age.

Walk the enclosure in a circle and look at the details instead of rushing to tick off names. The Kuge Brahmadeva Pillar stands at the south entrance with a small seated figure on top. The Chavundaraya Basadi, Chandragupta Basadi, Kattale Basadi and the Parshvanatha Basadi with its tall image and pillar are the main stops. Outside the fort wall, a short walk leads to the Bhadrabahu cave.

Most people see the inside of two or three of the shrines. Choose the ones that interest you rather than aiming for all fourteen.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go first thing for cooler air and good light
  • Carry water and a hat
  • Pick two or three basadis rather than all
  • Remove footwear at shrine doors
  • Ask a local guide for the dates of individual temples
