History and context
The story behind Chavundaraya Basadi

Why it matters
Why Chavundaraya Basadi is worth your time
Chavundaraya is the best-known patron in the town's history, and this temple carries his name. Traditional accounts say he built it himself; one newspaper account cites the view that his son Jinadevana built it in his memory. Either way it ties the hill to the person behind the great statue.
It is also a useful temple for general readers: large enough to take in, dedicated to a Tirthankara with a clear iconography, and set among other basadis so that you can compare it. For a first visit it is the easiest basadi on the hill to understand.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Find the basadi inside the walled enclosure; it is one of the larger buildings and easy to identify from the Commons photographs and from the hill. Walk a full circuit before entering. The building rises in two storeys, and the upper one is known as Megala Basadi. Look at the outer walls and proportions, which show the confident Ganga-period approach to granite temple building.
Inside, the main shrine is dedicated to Neminatha. Wikipedia records the sukhanasi (vestibule) with figures of Sarvahna and Kushmandini. Allow your eyes to adjust, and be respectful of any worshippers making offerings. Ask before photographing inside.
Outside the entrance, notice the inscription slabs set to one side. They are part of why the town is so valuable to historians; the hill is covered with records in several scripts, and a local guide can point out the most important ones.
