Before you go

Siddhavatam with elderly parents: what to know

  • The fort is mostly flat but exposed. Visit in the first hours of the morning, carry a hat and water, and avoid April and May altogether.
  • Check current ASI opening arrangements locally, as visiting hours are not published.
  • The Pennar can rise sharply in the monsoon months from August to October. Stay well away from the water's edge and avoid visits in flood conditions.
  • Hire a car with driver from Kadapa, because the village has no tourist transport and rides back can be hard to find.
  • Carry cash and snacks, as shops near the fort are few.
  • If mobility is limited, concentrate on the temples and the fort's gateway, rather than walking the full ramparts.

Easiest first

Places in Siddhavatam sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Kodandarama Temple, Vontimitta (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The complex is largely level, with some stone steps. Footwear is removed at the temple, so the ground can be hot at midday.
  • Pennar riverfront at Siddhavatam (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — The banks are uneven and can be slippery. Stay well back from the water and do not go alone in the monsoon.
  • Temples inside Siddavatam Fort (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — Paths between temples are short and mostly level, with some uneven stone. Seating is not published, so plan breaks in the shade.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Siddavatam Fort (Sidhout Fort) (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The ground is mostly level but uneven, with long stretches in the open sun and no published seating. Take shade, water and a companion, and stay on the main paths.
  • Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day, if permitted) — Terrain is rough, with gorges and steep slopes, and no public facilities are published. Not suited to those with limited mobility.

Practical tips for Siddhavatam

  • Go early. The fort is open and exposed. Arrive soon after sunrise and finish before midday.
  • Check access first. Visiting hours and any entry fee for the ASI-protected fort are not published, so confirm locally before travelling.
  • Mind the river. The Pennar swells during the monsoon and has flooded the settlement in the past. Do not go near the water after heavy rain.
  • Hire a car. The village has no tourist transport. A car and driver from Kadapa is the easiest option.
  • Dress for temples. Dress modestly and remove footwear at temples inside the fort.
  • Carry water and cash. Shops are few near the fort. Bring water, snacks and small cash.
  • Sanctuary access. Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary is restricted. Seek permission from the forest department well ahead, and do not enter without it.
  • Photography. Photograph the fort freely unless signs say otherwise, but ask before photographing worshippers or deities.
