The short answer

Banllé Vegetarian Restaurant: what visitors should know first

One of the clearest places in Siem Reap to eat Khmer food without meat or fish. Guides describe it as vegetarian with many vegan dishes, but we could not confirm it is egg-free, so ask about egg in sauces and amok.

Why it matters

Why Banllé Vegetarian Restaurant is worth your time

Cambodian dishes are routinely built on fish sauce, prahok and shrimp paste, so a menu planned around plants is a real convenience for vegetarians. Banllé is one of the places guides return to for a meal that does not need an interrogation of the kitchen.

The setting also suits older travellers who prefer a seated, unhurried lunch to the noise of the centre. The caution is egg: vegetarian here does not mean egg-free, and we have therefore tagged only the vegan options, not pure vegetarian.

How to experience it

Banllé is set in a restored wooden Khmer house with a garden on Street 26 in Wat Bo, according to a Green Queen guide from 2019. That guide names vegetable amok, grilled tofu, mushroom curry and a platter with homemade sweet and sour sauce, and says the vegetables come from an on-site farm.

Another guide describes the food as vegetarian and says most dishes are marked vegan. It also notes that traditional amok contains egg and does not say whether the vegetarian version here does, so ask before ordering if you avoid eggs. Both sources are older than this year, so check the menu in person.

It is a calmer alternative to the Old Market area. Arrive in daylight to find the lane easily and to enjoy the garden, and ask for the softer curries if the group dislikes heat. We found no Jain statement, so request no onion or garlic early.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Ask whether dishes contain egg
  • Confirm hours before going
  • Request no onion or garlic if needed
  • Check access to the garden
