The short answer

Kbal Spean: what visitors should know first

Only for fit travellers. The walk is uphill through forest for around 40 minutes each way, and carvings are best seen after the rains. Combine with Banteay Srei in the morning; others may prefer to skip this and rest.

History and context

The story behind Kbal Spean

The carvings at Kbal Spean date from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, during the reigns of Suryavarman I and Udayadityavarman II, and inscriptions suggest most of the work happened under Udayadityavarman II.

The site lies on the southwest slopes of the Kulen Hills in Banteay Srei District and within Phnom Kulen National Park.

Why it matters

Why Kbal Spean is worth your time

Kbal Spean is a riverbed in the Kulen hills carved with lingas, yonis and figures of Hindu gods. The water flows over the carvings, and it is thought to carry the sanctity of the carved symbols downstream toward Angkor.

The carvings give a different view of the Khmer world from the great temples: they use the river itself as a sacred object. It is also a physical, natural visit, with a waterfall and forest, in contrast to the stone temples.

  3. 03

    The waterfall

A pool and fall at the start of the carved section.

How to experience it

Drive from Banteay Srei along a road that ends near an army camp, then walk uphill for about 40 minutes through forest. The first site is a waterfall and rock pool; carvings begin along the river further up. Look for reclining Vishnu with Lakshmi, Brahma on a lotus and Shiva and Uma on a bull.

The carvings are most visible just after the monsoon when the water level drops, so November is a good month. In the dry season the river runs low, and in the monsoon it can be fast and obscured. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the path is uneven and humid.

Plan on 2 to 3 hours in all. Go early to avoid heat. If you do not want the walk, spend more time at Banteay Srei and return to town for a rest. Kbal Spean is for travellers who like a little adventure and enjoy forest scenery.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start early
  • Wear closed shoes
  • Bring water
  • Go after the rains for clearer carvings
  • Skip if mobility is limited
