Why it matters

Why Coronation Bridge (Sevoke Bridge) is worth your time

The bridge was named for the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and it linked the plains with the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Its fixed arch, anchored in rock on both banks, was a solution to a river too deep and fast to support piers in the bed.

Today it is still a lifeline for the road to the hills and a recognisable landmark of the colonial-era engineering of the region. The tiger statues at one end give it its local name.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The Coronation Bridge carries the highway over the Teesta at Sevoke, and it is best seen from a safe viewpoint on the riverbank or at the approach road. Look at the large concrete arch, the red and white steel deck and the way the river valley narrows here as it leaves the hills. A railway bridge runs close by.

Be careful with traffic: this is a working highway with heavy trucks, so avoid stopping on the carriageway and do not stand on the narrow edge for photographs. Ask your driver to find a safe pull-in, and keep the stop short.

The bridge fits well with the Sevoke Kali temple, which is a short distance away, and with the Gajoldoba barrage if you are keen on river views. If you are heading to Kalimpong, you will cross the bridge anyway, so it works as a natural pause on the way.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Stop only at a safe viewpoint, not on the carriageway
  • Keep the stop short; traffic is heavy
  • Go in morning or late afternoon light
  • Keep an eye on children near the road
  • Combine with Sevoke Kali Mandir
