How to experience it

If you are at NJP for another reason, spend half an hour finding the narrow-gauge platform. The station has ten platforms, of which two are narrow gauge, according to Wikipedia, and the hill railway starts from one of them. Look at the small locomotives and carriages, which are noticeably smaller than the main line trains next door.

If you plan to ride, book ahead and check which services are running. Wikipedia notes that daily tourist trains run between Darjeeling and Ghum and the steam-hauled Red Panda service runs between Darjeeling and Kurseong, while a Vistadome service has been run from NJP. Treat the ride as the experience, not as transport, and arrange a car to carry your luggage ahead.

If you are only passing through, a quick look at the platform is enough. Keep it short if your train departs soon, as the station is crowded and the transfer from the platform to your car can take time.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
