Simlipal is the forest at the centre of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district: a tiger reserve of roughly 2,750 sq km, a national park since 1980 and a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve since 2009. The name is generally traced to the simul, or red silk-cotton tree, that flowers across the hills in late winter. The hills rise to around 1,100 m, and the reserve holds sal forest, grassland meadows, a dozen or so rivers and two of the tallest waterfalls in eastern India.

The animal most people have heard of is the pseudo-melanistic tiger, whose stripes are so broad that the coat looks dark. Seeing one is luck, not a promise. Elephants, gaur, chausingha and a long bird and orchid list make the drive worthwhile even without a big cat. Access is controlled: you enter by one of two gates, Pithabata on the Baripada side or Kaliani on the Jashipur side, in an approved four-wheel-drive vehicle with a forest-department guide, and you are out by evening.

Most visitors base themselves in Baripada, the district town, which adds a 16th-century Jagannath temple, a distinctive women-led Rath Yatra and the mask-free Mayurbhanj Chhau dance to the trip. Simlipal suits parents and older travellers who are happy to sit in a vehicle for long forest drives, but it is not an easy place: roads are rough, facilities are basic and distances are long. Plan around the reserve's season, which closes for the monsoon, and confirm opening dates before you book anything.

One good day

1 day in Simlipal

Book your entry and vehicle in advance and be at Pithabata gate early, as entry is in the morning and you must be out by evening. Follow the forest guide on the circuit that passes Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls, with a stop at Chahala meadow if the guide advises. Carry water and lunch, since there are no restaurants inside. Aim to leave the forest before dusk and return to Baripada for the night.

What and where to eat in Simlipal.

Food to try in Simlipal

Food and restaurants

Eating in the Simlipal area is simple and local. Odia home-style meals of rice, dal, vegetable curries and fish are available in Baripada, and the better hotels will arrange packed lunches for forest days. Inside the reserve there are no restaurants, so carry water, snacks and lunch. The reserve rules prohibit non-vegetarian food in the safari area and liquor, so choose vegetarian packed meals.

If you stay at a heritage property or a forest camp, ask in advance what the kitchen can prepare and whether dietary needs can be met. Restaurants in smaller towns such as Jashipur are basic; for families and older travellers, a hotel meal in Baripada is the safest option. Bottled or filtered water is advised everywhere.

Shopping in Simlipal

Shopping

Shopping at Simlipal is modest and mostly about local crafts. Mayurbhanj is known for sal-leaf plates and cups made by Santhal women, sabai-grass products and Dokra metal casting, but check where an item is made and buy from workshops or cooperatives rather than roadside sellers if you want authenticity. The reserve's eco-tourism programme describes bamboo, wood, leaf and natural-fibre crafts made by village artisans, and some visits include workshops.

Prices are rarely fixed, so ask politely and pay a fair figure. Do not collect anything from the forest, including flowers, orchids or stones, as this is prohibited inside the reserve.

Choose without overthinking

Which Simlipal experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Pithabata gate or Kaliani gate?

Pick Pithabata, the Baripada-side entry, if you want the Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls and the Chahala meadow. Pick Kaliani, on the Jashipur side, if you prefer the Gurguria orchidarium, nature trails and Ramatirtha. Pithabata is the better first-timer choice.

Day visit or a night inside the reserve?

A day visit from Baripada is simpler and works for most families, but it means a lot of driving. A night in a forest camp gives you the early-morning drive and a quieter feel, though booking, season limits and basic facilities need more planning.

Simlipal or a Baripada culture day?

The forest rewards time and early starts; Baripada is easier on older legs. Combine them: spend the forest day first, then use Baripada's temple, Chhau and palace for a gentler day.

Waterfalls or tiger watching?

Choose the waterfalls if you want a dependable highlight. Tigers are a bonus, not a promise, and long drives with low odds suit patient wildlife watchers more than families with short attention spans.

Simlipal travel tips

  1. 01

    Season

The reserve closes for the monsoon. Recent notices have set reopening in October and closure around the start of July, but the Field Director announces dates each year, so confirm before booking.

  2. 02

    Permits and guide

Entry is by approved vehicle with a forest guide. The official site recommends online booking before 7 am and notes that offline booking at the gate is possible if seats remain.

  3. 03

    Vehicle

The vehicle must be four-wheel-drive with about 180 mm ground clearance. Carry your ID and the vehicle registration papers.

  4. 04

    Timing

Morning safaris start early, around 5.30 am per the official site. Be out of the forest by the evening cut-off and do not plan night driving.

  5. 05

    Food and water

There are no restaurants inside. Carry water, snacks and vegetarian lunch; non-vegetarian food and liquor are not allowed in the safari area.

  6. 06

    Rules

No drones, no off-track driving and no picking plants. Stay in the vehicle unless the guide says otherwise, keep noise low and respect the animals.

  7. 07

    Health

Wikipedia describes the area as malaria-prone. Carry repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk and talk to your doctor about precautions.

  8. 08

    Connectivity and cash

Mobile coverage is patchy inside the forest. Carry some cash for small purchases and tips, as card acceptance outside the main towns is unreliable.

Simlipal with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a vehicle with good suspension and sit in the middle seats; forest tracks are long and bumpy, and a day inside can mean several hours of driving.
  • Start early, carry water, snacks and any medicines, and agree a comfort stop with your guide; there are no restaurants or pharmacies inside.

Useful answers

Simlipal FAQs

When is Simlipal open to visitors?

The official site gives a season of roughly November to mid-June, though the safari page lists 16 September, and recent years have seen reopening in October and closure from July. Exact dates are notified by the reserve each year, so check before booking.

Can I enter Simlipal in my own car?

Only in an approved four-wheel-drive vehicle with about 180 mm ground clearance and with a forest-department guide, according to the official site. Ordinary sedans are not suitable.

Will I see a black tiger?

Possibly not. The official site is clear that sightings are not guaranteed. Early drives, quiet movement and patience improve the odds, and the scenery and other wildlife are worth the trip on their own.

Which gate should I use?

Pithabata, on the Baripada side, is the entry for the Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls and Chahala. Kaliani, on the Jashipur side, is used for Gurguria, nature trails and other eco-tourism routes.

Is Simlipal suitable for elderly parents?

With care, yes. Most sightseeing is from the vehicle, but the roads are rough and facilities are limited. Choose a comfortable vehicle, go in the cooler months and keep days short.
