The short answer

Simlipal Tiger Reserve safari: what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy long forest drives and can accept that tigers are never guaranteed. Book your vehicle and guide in advance, enter early at Pithabata or Kaliani gate, carry food and water, and plan to be out before evening. Check the season notice first.

History and context

The story behind Simlipal Tiger Reserve safari

Simlipal was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973 and a national park in 1980. The Government of India declared it a biosphere reserve in 1994, and UNESCO added it to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves in May 2009. It is part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve, along with the Hadgarh and Kuldiha sanctuaries.

Tiger numbers dropped sharply in the 2010s, and Wikipedia records that two females were brought from Tadoba-Andhari in 2024 to add genetic diversity. Villagers from some areas of the core were relocated in earlier years, while others remain inside.

Why it matters

Why Simlipal Tiger Reserve safari is worth your time

Simlipal is one of the larger protected forests in eastern India, with a core of about 1,195 sq km inside a reserve of roughly 2,750 sq km. It has been a tiger reserve since 1973, a national park since 1980 and part of UNESCO's biosphere network since 2009. The forest carries sal, grassland and more than a thousand plant species, including dozens of orchids.

Its best-known resident is the pseudo-melanistic tiger. Wikipedia reports that around a third of the reserve's tigers show the dark coat, and that numbers had fallen to a handful in 2014 before recovering. Villages remain inside the reserve and local communities shape its story, so the visit is as much about how people and a protected forest share space as it is about wildlife.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Pseudo-melanistic tigers

Wikipedia reports that about 37 per cent of Simlipal's tigers show the dark, broad-striped coat. You may well not see one, but that is the draw.

  2. 02

    Waterfalls along the Pithabata route

Joranda and Barehipani sit on the standard safari circuit from Pithabata and make a dependable highlight for the day.

  3. 03

    Elephants, gaur and orchids

The reserve is part of an elephant reserve and holds orchids, birds and other mammals, so a quiet drive rewards patient watching.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Simlipal as a day of forest driving with a few stops, not as a conventional sight. Decide your gate first. Pithabata, on the Baripada side, is used for the Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls and the Chahala meadow, while Kaliani, on the Jashipur side, is used for Gurguria and the nature-trail routes. Book your vehicle and guide in advance through the official channels, carry ID and the vehicle papers, and expect to enter in the morning.

Once inside, the guide leads and sets the pace. Ask to stop at viewpoints, listen for alarm calls and keep voices low. Elephants, gaur and chausingha are more likely than tigers, and birds and orchids fill the gaps. The official site stresses that sightings are never promised, so judge the day by the forest and the waterfalls, not the tiger.

Pack water, snacks and a vegetarian lunch, as there are no restaurants inside and non-vegetarian food and liquor are not allowed in the safari area. Leave in time to be out of the forest by evening, and keep a spare day in the plan in case of weather or a late opening.
