The short answer

Gardens by the Bay: what visitors should know first

Yes, for almost every first-time visitor. Go in the late afternoon, walk the free outdoor areas, then decide whether the paid Cloud Forest or Flower Dome is worth it. The Supertree light show after dark is the main reason to stay on.

History and context

The story behind Gardens by the Bay

The Bay South garden opened to the public on 29 June 2012, and the earlier Bay East garden opened its first phase in October 2011. Together with the Bay Central link the three gardens cover about 105 hectares. The Flower Dome was listed by Guinness World Records in 2015 as the largest glass greenhouse, and the Cloud Forest's central mountain stands 42 metres tall.

Why it matters

Why Gardens by the Bay is worth your time

Gardens by the Bay is the clearest statement of how Singapore sees itself: a dense, tropical city that plants its way out of the heat. Opened on 29 June 2012 on reclaimed land beside Marina Bay, it was designed around a master plan by Grant Associates, with the two conservatories by WilkinsonEyre. The 18 Supertrees, between 25 and 50 metres tall, are working structures as well as sculpture: they carry planting, collect rainwater and house air vents for the conservatories.

For families it works because it is varied and easy. Children get the waterfall and the lights, grandparents get shade, seats and cool air, and nobody needs a ticket for the outdoor park. It is also a good example of how Singapore handles heat: the conservatories imitate a cool, dry Mediterranean climate and a cool, moist mountain climate, which is why the interiors feel so different from the street outside.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Cloud Forest

A planted indoor mountain with a 35-metre waterfall, reached by lift and walked downhill.

  2. 02

    Supertree Grove

Eighteen vertical gardens, 25 to 50 metres tall, that you can walk beneath for free.

  3. 03

    Garden Rhapsody show

A nightly music and light show among the Supertrees, listed at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm; confirm on the day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive about 4 pm, when the heat has eased, and begin in the Cloud Forest, which is the more dramatic of the two conservatories. Its 35-metre indoor waterfall and the planted mountain inside are best seen by taking the lift to the top and walking down the ramps, so the whole route is downhill. The air inside is cool and damp, which many older travellers find a relief after the street.

Come out into the Supertree Grove, the cluster of tall vertical gardens that is the image most people have of Singapore. Walk under them first, then, if you have the energy, take the OCBC Skyway between two of the trees for a view across the bay to Marina Bay Sands. Eat early at one of the food halls in the park, then find a place to sit before the Garden Rhapsody light and music show, which Wikipedia reports runs at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm; confirm the current times on the day.

If your time is short, skip the Flower Dome unless you like plants, since the Cloud Forest gives more for the same ticket money. A short walk across the Dragonfly Bridge brings you to the bayside paths, which are quieter and good for a slow stroll after the show.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Buy conservatory tickets online before you go to avoid queues
  • Arrive late afternoon and stay for the light show
  • Carry water and a hat for the outdoor sections
  • Check lift access if walking is difficult

Entry to the outdoor gardens is free. The Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory are ticketed separately; the official site listed Flower Dome tickets from S$8 and Skyway tickets from S$10 when we checked, and prices change.
