Area by area

Singapore neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Little India and Farrer Park

Best for: Indian families who want familiar food, temples and Mustafa Centre nearby

Good to know: Lots of vegetarian restaurants and good MRT links. The streets are busy and noisy, especially on Sunday evenings, and rooms are often smaller.

  2. 02

Marina Bay and the Downtown Core

Best for: First-time visitors who want the skyline, Gardens by the Bay and short walks to the waterfront

Good to know: Central and convenient, with stations and malls nearby. Hotels cost more here, and restaurants are pricey, but lifts and air-conditioning are reliable.

  3. 03

    Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar

Best for: Visitors who want temples, hawker food and nightlife within walking distance

Good to know: Close to Sri Mariamman Temple, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and several hawker centres. Streets are lively in the evening, and pavements are narrow.

  4. 04

    Orchard Road

Best for: Shoppers and short stays

Good to know: A central district of malls and hotels with MRT access. It is easy for older travellers, but expensive and less characterful than the older districts.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
