The short answer

Gaurisagar Tank and Dols: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you have a car and a half-day to spare. It is rural and calm, with fewer crowds. Allow about an hour and pair it with Kareng Ghar or Charaideo on the same trip.

History and context

The story behind Gaurisagar Tank and Dols

Wikipedia and the district tourism pages credit Queen Phuleswari, wife of Siva Singha, with the tank and temples. Wikipedia dates the work to 1715 to 1719; UNESCO's tentative list gives 1715 to 1717, and other sources place the temples in the 1720s, so the dates vary.

There are three temples on the north bank, dedicated to Shiva, Devi (Durga) and Vishnu. The Devi Dol stands on an octagonal plinth and is built of stone and brick.

Why it matters

Why Gaurisagar Tank and Dols is worth your time

Gaurisagar shows the Ahom queens' role as patrons. The tank and temples were commissioned by Queen Phuleswari, wife of Siva Singha, and the sculpture on the Devi Dol is some of the finest stone carving in the district.

Its quiet rural setting is also a useful contrast to the town's monuments, a reminder that the Ahom landscape extended into farmland and water bodies, not only palaces. Combined with Kareng Ghar and Charaideo, it makes a rewarding day that shows how widely the Ahom state spread its monuments, and it lets you see everyday rural Assam on the road between them.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out through the farmland north of Sivasagar to the tank, which district sources say covers about 400 bighas. Park near the temple group on the north bank and start with the Devi Dol, the largest of the three, which is decorated with sandstone sculpture.

Then walk to the water's edge for the view. In winter the tank is a resting place for migratory birds, and early morning is the best time. The setting is open and rural, with village life going on around the water.

There are no cafes or large facilities, so carry water and snacks. A loop that includes Gaurisagar, Kareng Ghar and a stop at the roadside for tea makes a good half-day outside the town.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Hire a car; public transport is limited
  • Carry water and snacks
  • Dress modestly for the temples
  • Combine with Kareng Ghar
