The short answer
Charaideo Maidams: what visitors should know first
Yes, it is the most significant day trip from Sivasagar, about 28 to 30 km east. Allow half a day, go in the dry season and treat it as a sacred site, not a theme park.
History and context
The story behind Charaideo Maidams
UNESCO inscribed the Moidams at Charaideo on 26 July 2024, describing a necropolis of 90 mounds built over about 600 years from the 13th to 19th centuries under the Tai-Ahom. The prince Siu-ka-pha selected Charaideo as the first capital and burial site.
The site is managed jointly by the Assam Directorate of Archaeology and the Archaeological Survey of India. Heavy rain, erosion and vegetation growth are among the conservation challenges.

Why it matters
Why Charaideo Maidams is worth your time
Charaideo was the first capital chosen by the Tai-Ahom after they migrated to the Brahmaputra valley in the 13th century, and the burial ground continued in use for around 600 years. It is the only cultural World Heritage Site in India's North-East, as reported by the Assam government.
The mounds show how the Ahom blended Tai traditions with local landscapes, and the site is a reminder of a dynasty that ruled Assam for around six centuries.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive east from Sivasagar to Charaideo, about 28 to 30 km. Start at the main cluster of preserved mounds and walk the paths between them. The domed earth mounds, each covering a vault, rise out of grass and trees in a quiet landscape.
UNESCO notes that local communities regard the moidams as sacred burial sites, and the rituals of ancestor worship are still practised there. Keep voices low, do not climb the mounds and respect any ritual taking place.
Charaideo is not a place for a long, structured tour. A walk of an hour or two, a stop to read the interpretation boards, and a conversation with a local guide are enough. Pack water and a hat, and plan to return to town for lunch.
Plan with confidence
