The short answer
Joysagar Tank and Joy Dol: what visitors should know first
Yes, as a gentle, scenic stop of about an hour, ideal after the busier monuments. The tank is long and flat to walk along, and the Joy Dol adds a historical anchor.
History and context
The story behind Joysagar Tank and Joy Dol
Rudra Singha had the tank dug in 1697, in memory of his mother, Joymoti Konwari, and the Wikipedia article says it took about 45 days. The Joy Dol, also called the Keshavnarayan Vishnu Dol, was completed in 1698 and dedicated to Vishnu.
The temple group on the northern bank also includes a Sivadol, a Devi Dol and the Ghanashyam House. Reports in recent years describe weed cover and encroachment on parts of the tank.

Why it matters
Why Joysagar Tank and Joy Dol is worth your time
The Joysagar tank was dug in memory of the king's mother Joymoti Konwari, whose sacrifice is remembered in Assamese history and in a well-known folk tradition. That personal link makes it more than an engineering work; it is also a memorial.
Such tanks were water sources, ritual sites and statements of royal power. Joysagar shows the Ahom habit of pairing a large water body with temples. It is also now a bird habitat and a community space, which is part of why it remains alive.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Begin at the Joy Dol, the Vishnu temple on the north bank, and look at the carving and stonework outside before going in. The temple is built of brick and stone in the style associated with Assam's hill temples, and the walls carry images of celestial figures and scenes of royal sports.
Then walk a section of the tank bank. The tank is very large, and sources give different areas (108 acres in the Wikipedia infobox, 318 acres in its text), so enjoy the sense of scale instead of the number. In winter, migratory birds gather on the water, and the early morning is the best time to see them.
If you are short on time, the north bank is enough. Keep a little energy to see the Fakuwa Dol and Ranganath Doul nearby, which are part of the same Rudra Singha complex.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
