Day 1: The drive-up circuit from Shillong
Leave Shillong by about 7 am and stop briefly at the Mawkdok Dympep viewpoint on the way if the valley is clear. Reach Sohra in the morning for Nohkalikai Falls while the clouds are usually still thin, then continue to Mawsmai: Seven Sisters Falls first, then Mawsmai Cave. Have lunch at a sit-down restaurant such as Orange Roots, and spend the early afternoon at Thangkharang Park for the Kynrem Falls and Bangladesh plains views. If time and legs remain, drive to Dainthlen Falls before heading back to Shillong ahead of dusk. Roads are slow in fog, so do not stack more than this.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nohkalikai Falls About 45-60 minutes Easy Morning, before the cloud builds; June to October for water, November to March for clearer air Mawsmai Cave 20-40 minutes Moderate Anytime, but the cave is wet year-round; visit in the morning to avoid queues Thangkharang Park About an hour Easy Clear mornings; October to April for visibility, though monsoon makes the falls stronger Dainthlen Falls 30-45 minutes Moderate Monsoon for volume; morning for fewer crowds Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Mawsmai Cave: The route has uneven, damp floors, narrow sections where you stoop, and some stepped stretches. There is not much seating inside, and the passage can be crowded. If you have any difficulty stooping or balance, consider waiting outside.
With parents at Dainthlen Falls: Walking is short but uneven, over rock that gets very slippery when wet. There are limited rails or seats, so it suits steady walkers better. Older visitors can enjoy the view from the top without going down.

Day 2: Culture and a longer walk
Begin at the Nongsawlia church and school area in Lower Cherrapunjee, then the Dainthlen Falls viewpoint. If you are fit and have a guide, walk to Wei Sawdong Falls, which is a short but steep trail. Return to Shillong or continue to Dawki, which has its own guide, in the afternoon.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Dainthlen Falls 30-45 minutes Moderate Monsoon for volume; morning for fewer crowds Wei Sawdong Falls About 1-1.5 hours including the walk Demanding October to March, when trails are drier; monsoon has more water but is slippery Pace: Wei Sawdong Falls involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

Pacing
Pacing a Sohra (Cherrapunji) trip for parents and children
- Plan around the viewpoints you can reach by car: Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Thangkharang Park and Mawsmai Cave involve only short walks, and avoid the long stair descents unless you are confident on steps.
- Do not attempt the Nongriat double-decker walk without a guide and honest fitness: it is about 3,000 to 3,500 stone steps down and the same back up, with no easy exit halfway.
- Mawsmai Cave has narrow, damp sections where you stoop, and grip shoes are advised. Skip it if you have knee, back or balance concerns.
- Start early. Mist and cloud build through the day, and views that were clear at 8 am are often closed in by afternoon.
- Carry a warm layer and rain protection in every season, as well as water and snacks; shops between the sights are few.
- Allow for slow roads: fog, landslide debris and monsoon rain can add hours, so do not book a tight flight or train the same evening.
