Why it matters
Why Nohsngithiang (Seven Sisters) Falls is worth your time
The Seven Sisters is one of the clearest illustrations of how the Sohra plateau works. Rainwater arrives on the top, pours over the limestone edge and falls hundreds of metres towards the plains, and on a wet day the whole cliff face is covered with moving water. Its alternative name, Mawsmai Falls, ties it to the nearby village, and the English name comes from the seven segments visible in full flow.
Because the falls depend on the rains, visiting them tells you something about the district's rhythms. The same cliff that is dramatic in July is barely marked in January. If you can, ask your driver what the flow has been like in the past few weeks, and consider the viewpoint alongside Nohkalikai, which behaves in a similar way.

How to experience it
Seven Sisters Falls, known locally as Nohsngithiang, drops 315 metres from the limestone cliffs, and in full flow the water divides into seven strands that run side by side across a cliff face about 70 metres wide. The view from the platform takes in the falls and, on a clear day, the Bangladesh plains beyond. The falls are seasonal, flowing only in the rainy months, so what you see depends entirely on when you come.
In the monsoon the cascades merge and the falls can vanish behind cloud entirely, so be flexible. After the rains, from about September to November, the water is still strong while the sky is more likely to be clear, which makes this the best window for a good view. In winter the falls may be reduced to a trickle or dry, and you will see mostly the cliff and valley.
The viewpoint is a quick stop, and most people spend 20 to 30 minutes. It sits close to Mawsmai Cave and the Eco Park, so these three fit together into a morning. Late in the day, if the sky is clear, the light on the falls can be good for photographs.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
