Before you go
Solapur with elderly parents: what to know
- Do outdoor sights in the first two hours after sunrise; afternoons are hot even in winter.
- Carry water and a hat for the fort and Nannaj; shade and seating are scarce.
- Avoid the Gadda Yatra in mid-January if crowds are a concern.
- Hire a car with a driver for Akkalkot rather than relying on crowded buses.
- Dress modestly for temples and remove footwear outside.
Easiest first
Places in Solapur sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Akkalkot Royal Armoury Museum (Culture and craft · 30–60 minutes) — Mostly level indoor viewing, though a few steps may be involved at the entrance and gallery spaces are not guaranteed to be well lit or air-conditioned. Ask about seating on arrival.
- Siddheshwar Temple and Lake (Places of worship · 45–90 minutes) — The temple is largely level with steps at some entrances and plenty of shade inside courtyards. Queues and crowds grow during Makar Sankranti, so older visitors should choose a weekday outside the fair.
- Swami Samarth Vatavruksha Mandir, Akkalkot (Places of worship · 1–2 hours for darshan, longer on busy days) — The approach is level but crowded, and queues at peak times can be long. Choose a weekday, ask staff about seating in the queue and do not plan other tasks on busy days.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Akkalkot Fort (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours with the Old Rajwada and bastion) — Lanes are narrow and busy, the bastion is reached through a small passage beside a shop, and there is almost no seating. The Old Rajwada can be seen from outside its entrance, which suits older visitors, but the upper levels are closed.
- Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, Nannaj (Places to visit · Half a day with travel) — Vehicles stop outside the gate, and a short walk leads to the watch tower and observation hut. There is little shade and no tourist amenities, so older visitors should carry water and a hat and may prefer to stay near the entrance.
- Solapur Bhuikot Fort (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes) — The ground inside is uneven, with loose stone, dust and little shade, and seating is scarce. Older visitors can walk the lane along the outer wall and see the main gateway and lake edge without climbing, then take the shorter paths inside with a companion.
