Why it matters
Why Kannappa Hill and Bhakta Kannappa temple is worth your time
Kannappa is one of the 63 Nayanar saints of the Tamil Shaiva tradition, and his story is one of the most retold in Shaivism. Associating it with Srikalahasti turns the hill into more than scenery: it is part of why pilgrims regard the whole site as sacred.
For travellers, it also offers the best vantage on the town, river and temple from above. The legend is also why many pilgrims here speak of devotion by deed rather than by ritual: the hunter's offerings were not formal, yet the tradition holds them up as the model. Climbing even part of the hill, and looking back at the temple across the river, gives that story a physical setting that the temple corridors cannot.

How to experience it
Start early, before the sun gets strong. The hill rises beside the river and the temple, and photographs from Commons show a flight of steps up to a small Bhakta Kannappa temple and lookout points that give a view over the town and the Swarnamukhi.
The story to carry up with you is Kannappa's. In the tradition, a hunter named Thinnan offered meat and water to a lingam he found in the forest, and when the lingam bled from an eye he plucked out his own to stop it; Shiva stopped him before he gave the second. The Srikalahasti temple is closely tied to that legend.
Come down carefully, take time to rest at the bottom, and go on to the main temple afterwards if you have not already.
