Srikalahasti is a small town in Tirupati district, on the bank of the Swarnamukhi River, about 36 to 38 km from Tirupati. It exists mainly because of one temple: the Srikalahasteeswara Temple, where Shiva is worshipped as the Vayu (air) lingam, one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. The name is said to join the spider, the snake and the elephant, three creatures that in legend worshipped here and gained liberation.
The temple is the day. Its roots are dated to the 5th century, the Cholas rebuilt it in the 11th, Vijayanagara rulers added to it in the 16th, and the main gopuram, which collapsed in 2010, was rebuilt and consecrated in 2017. Around it are the river ghat, a hill associated with the hunter-devotee Kannappa, a hill shrine to Subrahmanya, and a handful of smaller sights. Many visitors also come specifically for the Rahu-Ketu puja.
The second reason to come is Srikalahasti Kalamkari, a pen-drawn textile craft in natural dyes, registered as a Geographical Indication. Ask to see a working studio before you buy.
It is an easy trip from Tirupati, and works well as a half-day or one-day visit paired with Tirumala. Older travellers should plan for queues and long standing, go early on a weekday, and avoid Maha Shivaratri and other festival days unless they want the crowds.
