Before you go

Srikalahasti with elderly parents: what to know

  • Go to the temple early on a weekday, before heat and crowds build.
  • Plan for long queues and standing; carry water and a hat for the outside approach.
  • Skip the hill climbs, Kannappa Hill and the Subrahmanya shrine, if steps are a problem.
  • Confirm priority or wheelchair arrangements with the temple before you go.
  • Base yourself in Tirupati if you want a comfortable hotel, and treat Srikalahasti as a day trip.
  • Rest through the midday hours, which are hot most of the year.

Easiest first

Places in Srikalahasti sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive) — Viewing is mostly from the tank bund and paths close to the water, so there is little climbing, but shade, seating and toilets are limited. The main strain is the road journey and the heat; go early and take a hat and water.
  • Pulicat Lake (Places to visit · Full day) — Mostly level lakeside walking and boat options; long road transfer and heat are the main strain. Older visitors should carry water and shade.
  • Srikalahasti Kalamkari (Culture and craft · 1-2 hours) — Mostly seated viewing in small workshops and shops; some are on narrow lanes with uneven floors. Easy for most older visitors.
  • Srikalahasti Rajagopuram (Places to visit · 15-30 minutes) — The forecourt is open and mostly level, with no climbing needed to see the tower. Shade is thin by midday, so older visitors may prefer to look from the car or a nearby seat and return after darshan.
  • Swarnamukhi riverfront and ghat (Places to visit · 15-30 minutes) — Steps down to the water can be wet and uneven, and the river is seasonal; stay on the upper steps if balance is an issue. Seating and shade are limited.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Jnanaprasunambika shrine (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — Level stone floors and covered corridors, but queues can be long and no seating is provided inside. Visit early, and pace yourself between shrines.
  • Rahu-Ketu puja at Srikalahasti (Places of worship · 1-3 hours depending on queue) — Seating is limited and queues can be long, standing on stone in heat. Older visitors should go early on a weekday, bring water, and ask about priority arrangements. Wheelchair routes are limited by older temple layout.
  • Rock-cut Ganesha shrine (Places of worship · 15-20 minutes) — Involves steps down below ground level, with limited light and narrow spaces; older visitors or those with knee problems may prefer to skip it or take it slowly with a helper.
  • Srikalahasteeswara Temple (Places of worship · Half a day (about 3-4 hours including queues)) — Level stone floors and long corridors, with queues that can run for an hour or more on busy days. Footwear comes off outside, so stone can be hot by midday. Ask staff about priority or wheelchair arrangements for elders, and carry water and a hat for the approach.
  • Talakona waterfall (Places to visit · Full day) — Some walking over uneven forest paths; trekking routes of varying difficulty exist. Older visitors should stay on the easier paths and take the vehicle options where available.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Kannappa Hill and Bhakta Kannappa temple (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — Reaching the hill temple involves a climb of steps, with uneven surfaces and little shade; it is not easy for those with knee, heart or breathing issues. Carry water and take rests.
  • Sri Subrahmanya Swamy Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — Reaching the temple means climbing a flight of steps. Not suitable for those with knee or breathing problems; consider skipping.
