Why it matters
Why Navaratri at Sringeri is worth your time
Navaratri is when the temple's identity as a centre of Saraswati worship is most visible. The festival opens with a special abhishekam and runs for ten days with new daily forms of the goddess, Vedic recitation and evening processions.
Seeing a procession down the main street shows how the temple, the town and the Peetham's students and priests fit together. It is not the best time for a quiet visit, but it is the best time to see the place at full stretch.

How to experience it
Check the Peetham's festival page for the current year's dates before you book travel, because Navaratri follows the lunar calendar. The official account describes a Mahabhishekam on Mahalaya Amavasya, then a different alankara of Sharadamba each day, from forms such as Hamsavahana to Rajarajeshwari.
Every evening the festival image is taken out in procession along Sringeri's main street, starting from outside the Sharadamba Temple in the Jagadguru's presence. Stand on the main road early to see it without crush.
On Vijayadashami, children are initiated into learning in the goddess's temple. With crowds large and lodging tight, treat Navaratri as an event to plan, not a casual drop-in.

- Check the official festival calendar before booking
- Arrive early to find lodging; rooms are first come, first served
