Sringeri is a small hill town in Chikmagalur district, at about 672 m in the wet Malnad country of the Western Ghats. It is known as the seat of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, the southern of the four monasteries tradition attributes to Adi Shankara, and the town's life revolves around the Sharadamba Temple, its dining hall and the Tunga river.
Most visitors come as pilgrims and stay a night or two. The core is compact: the Sharadamba and Vidyashankara temples share one complex on the north bank, the river steps and fish lie behind them, and a pedestrian footbridge leads across to the Narasimha Vanam on the south bank, where the Jagadguru lives. All of this can be covered in a day on foot.
Beyond the temples, the surrounding forest country has quiet outings: Kigga village with its temple of the sage Rishyashringa, and Sirimane Falls, which run full during and after the monsoon. Sringeri receives very heavy rain between June and September, so the dry months from November to February are far easier for older travellers.
It is a good destination for families and seniors who value calm over entertainment. Dress is traditional in the main shrines, accommodation is simple, and the Peetham's free meals and guest houses shape what is available. Come with realistic expectations and a flexible plan.
