Sujanpur Tira sits on the left bank of the Beas in Hamirpur district, about 24 km from Hamirpur town on the road to Palampur. It was the capital of Raja Sansar Chand, the Katoch ruler who patronised the Kangra school of miniature painting, and the town still bears the stamp of his court: a palace-fort on the hill, temples with painted walls, and one of the largest open grounds in Himachal Pradesh.
The fort is partly ruined, damaged by time and earthquakes including the 1905 Kangra quake, but the outer walls stand and the views over the river are good. Gauri Shankar temple, built in 1793, and Narbadeshwar temple, dated to 1823, carry wall paintings in the Kangra tradition. The Murli Manohar temple, built in 1790, stands beside the Chaugan, the ground where Katoch troops once trained and where the Sujanpur Holi fair is held each spring.
This is a small, quiet town, not a resort. Hotels are few, restaurants are simple and public transport is by road only, with no direct train service. It suits travellers who enjoy art history and unhurried walks, and who are happy to use it as a half-day or one-night stop between Hamirpur, Kangra and Palampur.
The best months are October to March. Time a visit for Holi if you want colour and crowds, or avoid it if you prefer calm.
