The short answer
Sudhanyakhali Watchtower: what visitors should know first
Worth it as a regular stop on a boat itinerary. The tower overlooks a freshwater pond that draws animals, and the mangrove park shows the main species at close range. Go in the quieter hours and do not expect a tiger; a patient hour is the whole point.

Why it matters
Why Sudhanyakhali Watchtower is worth your time
Fresh water is the limiting resource in the Sundarbans. The sea is saline and the tidal rivers carry salt for most of the year, so artificial freshwater ponds like the one at Sudhanyakhali do real work for wildlife and are one of the few places visitors can reasonably expect to watch animals come to drink.
The tower also shows how the reserve manages tourism: all visitors are guided, channels are limited to a few landing points, and elevated platforms keep people off the forest floor. The Banabibi shrine is a reminder that the people who work in this forest have their own rules for living alongside tigers.

How to experience it
Sudhanyakhali is a landing point on the standard boat circuit, so you reach it by launch from Sajnekhali and walk a short path from the jetty. The route is fenced and guided; you do not wander. The first thing most people look at is the mangrove park, a planted collection of the major species with labelled trees, which is a useful way to learn what grows where on the tidal gradient.
The main reason to come is the tower, which faces a freshwater pond. In a salty delta, fresh water is scarce, so the pond draws deer, boar and birds. The forest department built it for exactly that reason. Climb up, settle in and stay still for twenty minutes; the forest only shows itself to people who stop talking.
A small Banabibi shrine sits here, as at several other landings. Boatmen and forest staff often stop to leave a small offering, and it is courteous to follow their lead. Photograph only what you are invited to.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
