The short answer

Sundarban Honey: what visitors should know first

Buy a small jar if you want a genuine local product, but be careful about where. Check that the seller gives clear producer details, as the GI tag has made the name popular. Do not expect a tourist-ready shop; ask your lodge or operator.

History and context

The story behind Sundarban Honey

The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation applied for a Geographical Indication for Sundarban honey in July 2021, and the tag was issued in January 2024, valid until 11 July 2031. Collection happens each spring, with the corporation procuring and selling part of the harvest.

Why it matters

Why Sundarban Honey is worth your time

Honey collecting is one of the oldest livelihoods in the Sundarbans and one of the riskiest, because collectors work in tiger territory. Collectors commonly seek Bonbibi's protection before entering the forest, as the shrines suggest.

India registered Sundarban Honey as a Geographical Indication in January 2024, valid until July 2031, with the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation as applicant. Bangladesh registered its own for its side of the forest in 2025. Buying genuine honey supports those who take the risk, but only if it is sold honestly.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Sundarban honey comes from rock bees (Apis dorsata) that hang combs in mangrove trees. The collectors, called moulis or mawals, go into the forest in spring, roughly March to May, when the mangroves flower. The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation procures part of the harvest and applied for the Geographical Indication in 2021.

As a visitor you taste and buy rather than watch. Ask at your lodge or operator whether they sell honey from collectors they know, and look for sealed jars with a clear producer name. Honey is usually golden, though it can be red or dark brown, and it can taste lightly floral with a hint of mangrove.

Do not buy from anyone who offers to take you to a collector in the forest; entering the reserve to collect or watch honey is controlled and dangerous. Keep the jar upright in your bag and store it cool and sealed.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Buy sealed jars with a clear producer name
  • Compare price and colour across two sellers
  • Ask your lodge for trusted sources
  • Do not enter the forest to watch collection
