Why it matters

Why Gosaba and Sir Daniel Hamilton's Legacy is worth your time

Gosaba is a reminder that the Sundarbans is not only a forest but also a place where millions live, farm, fish and collect honey. The island was reclaimed from jungle by Sir Daniel Hamilton, who bought about 9,000 acres here in 1903 and built a cooperative system of credit, shops and a rural reconstruction institute. By the 1930s the estate had thousands of residents.

Rabindranath Tagore stayed here in December 1932, in Hamilton's house, and wrote about rural reconstruction. The island also shows today's pressures: cyclones, salt intrusion and rising water that put farming and homes at risk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Gosaba is where the road ends and the water begins. From Godkhali, a ferry carries people, bicycles and sometimes even auto-rickshaws across to the island, and from the Gosaba jetty most visitors continue by boat to Sajnekhali. Give the island itself some time on the way in or out.

The story to look for is Sir Daniel Hamilton's. A Scottish businessman, he bought land here in 1903 and set up a cooperative settlement with a credit society, a consumers' cooperative, a model farm and later a bank. Ask locally about the old Hamilton buildings and what survives; do not expect a staffed museum.

Craft projects on the islands, including batik work in Rangabelia and a craft store run by the Sundar Sundarban initiative at Pakhiralay, give a way to spend money that reaches villagers. Walk, talk to people and keep your camera down unless invited.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Allow an hour on the way in or out
  • Ask your operator which Hamilton sites are open
  • Buy crafts directly from community projects
  • Keep cameras respectful in villages
