Why it matters

Why Bali Island Village Stays is worth your time

The Sundarbans is both a protected forest and a home to millions of people. Homestays on Bali and other islands give income to families who otherwise depend on fishing, farming and forest products that carry risk, and they let visitors see the embankments, ponds and fields that protect the villages.

They also show climate pressure at first hand. Cyclones, such as Bulbul in 2019, have damaged Bali's homes and farms, and families speak openly about rising water and salt in the soil. A homestay is a quiet way to understand that.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Bali is one of the inhabited islands inside the delta, reached by ferry and local transport from Godkhali and Gosaba. Community-led initiatives such as Village Ways and Sundar Sundarban run homestays in family houses, with village walks, birdwatching, public-ferry island hopping, farm-to-table meals, craft workshops and folk performances.

Stay one or two nights. Mornings begin early with birdsong and temple rituals, and the pace is slow. Ask your host to take you around the fields, where fish, vegetables and rice grow close to the embankments that hold back the river. Evenings are quiet, with home-cooked meals of rice, fish and vegetables.

Combine the stay with a boat trip into the reserve through your operator. Respect homes and temples, ask before photographing, and pay fairly. Facilities are basic, so bring repellent, torch and any medicines you need.
