Plan 01

1 day in Surat

  1. 01

Day 1: Old city and an evening at the lake

Start at Surat Castle in the morning while it is cool, then drive to the Dutch and English cemeteries to see the merchant tombs. Break for lunch and a rest. In the late afternoon, visit Gopi Talav and walk the lake circuit, then eat in the old town around Khaudra Gali or try a sweet shop for ghari if it is in season.

Dutch and English Cemeteries1 to 1.5 hours for bothModerateMorning, November to February
Gopi Talav1 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon into evening, November to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Surat Castle: The approach is through busy old-city lanes and the fort has ramparts and steps, so ask locally which parts are open and step-free. Seating is limited; allow rest stops and avoid the middle of the day.

With parents at Dutch and English Cemeteries: Paths are uneven and shade is limited, with little seating, so allow a driver to wait and keep the visit short in warm weather. Some monuments are only viewable from outside.

Plan 02

2 days in Surat

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, tombs and Rander

Begin with Surat Castle, then the Dutch and English cemeteries before the day heats up. After a long lunch, drive over the river to Rander for a short look at the old quarter and its mosques, with modest dress and a local contact if possible. Finish at Gopi Talav in the evening.

Day 2: Markets and the sea

Spend a weekday morning at one of the textile markets on Ring Road or near Sahara Darwaja if you want sarees or fabric. After lunch and a rest, drive out to Dumas Beach for sunset snacks, staying on the promenade and out of the water. If you prefer wildlife, swap the beach for Sarthana Nature Park earlier in the day.

With parents at Sarthana Nature Park: The park covers about 81 acres, so walking distances add up. Seating and shade are available in places, but older visitors should pace themselves and use any internal transport if available.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Surat trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main sight in the morning, a rest after lunch and a gentle evening plan. Afternoons are warm and humid for much of the year.
  • Avoid June to September. Heavy monsoon rain has flooded the city repeatedly, and travel can be disrupted.
  • The old city lanes around the castle and Rander are crowded and uneven. Use a car and driver rather than walking long distances.
  • Gopi Talav is level and has seating, which makes it the easiest evening outing for older travellers.
  • Ghari and other sweets are very rich. Share small portions, especially if you have diabetes.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and easy car access, such as in Athwa or Vesu, rather than the old city.
